Stair jobs go wrong when tread counts or winders are missed. Follow this sequence on every stair survey.

Count every tread and riser

Measure one tread depth and riser height, then count flights including half-landings. Photograph winders and note whether carpet turns through them.

Measure landings separately

Landings often need a different roll direction. Measure length, width and any cupboard or rail deductions.

Use a stair runner calculator

For runner-only jobs, calculate linear metres with our Free Stair Runner Calculator, then add waste for pattern and binding.
